Member-only story
I joined a gym. Age 20. No clue what I was doing. My “routine” consisted of what I had read in magazines, what I saw other guys doing and a few pointers my dad gave me.
It wasn’t long before I started taking notes. Observations. Numbers. Weights, sets, reps, time, speed etc.
I became my own coach through a process of experimentation and discovery. There were mistakes, pain, lessons to be learned. Through it all, I found the process to be more satisfying than the end result.
There were moments along the way when I tapped into something. An inner-knowing. I was listening to intuition. But I still had doubts that I knew enough. There was more information I needed to acquire. Why? To fill a void, maybe. Or maybe because we are taught that there are experts who know more than we do. We need to sit back and memorize the facts these almighty powers of knowledge speak to us.
Lucky for me I have always walked to the beat of my own drum. Over the two decades of training in gyms and outside, I tuned into my intuition more and more. I listened to my body and beyond.
Along the way I experienced an interesting shift. The workouts became more about the present moment and less about following a plan or program.
This aspect of training was now what I looked forward to.
